On Oct. 17th and 18th, I attended my second sedation re-certification class at Rutgers School of Dental Medicine. At Spring Lake Dental Care, we offer sedation dentistry options to our patients, and our ability to practice these anxiety-relief techniques depends upon completing 20 hours of continuing education in sedation dentistry every 2 years. These re-certification courses help ensure that we are providing the latest and most effective sedation medications, techniques, and technologies to our patients – and that they are practiced in a safe environment.
During the consultation process, I ask my patients if they have any anxiety or fear of dental treatment, but I also look for physical queues from patients that might not be as comfortable admitting their nervousness. For patients that have concerns, I tell them that they’ve come to the right place. My practice is well known for our sedation dentistry techniques, and I often have other dentists refer their high-anxiety patients to my office for treatment. I view sedation dentistry as a three-step process: identify the problem, have a discussion, and give the patient options.
I typically have at least one or two sedation cases a week. There are a lot of anxious people out there—particularly when it comes to dental visits. They view sedation dentistry as an excellent way to handle their stress and manage their anxiety in relation to their dental needs. My goal as a dentist is to provide excellent dental care while making my patients feel as comfortable as possible in the process.
